What is the Leeds Apprenticeship Training Agency?

A not for profit company set up by Leeds City Council and Leeds City College, supported by the West & North Yorkshire Chamber. We offer companies, particularly in the SME marketplace, an innovative and dynamic solution for the employment of their new apprentices. For the apprentices we offer a supported Apprenticeship experience with a local host business.

What do we do?

The distinctive feature of the Leeds ATA is that we act as the legal employer of the apprentice/s and we place them with a host work provider, i.e. the SME. Our team will assist enterprises/companies by sourcing apprentices, supporting them into the workplace, ensuring the quality provision of the learning experience and working with the SME to identify long-term employment for the Apprentice. We also support our host work providers by working with them to source suitable training providers and manage the training.

How will it help my business?

Apprenticeships are a vital way of improving the skills of staff and generating a committed and valuable workforce. A well-trained, extra pair of hands could make a real difference to your chances of success.

How much will it cost?

The great benefit of working with the Leeds ATA is that you’ll know in advance of taking on an apprentice what your costs are likely to be during the period of the Apprenticeship. The weekly cost is likely to be between £140 and £175 – but that’s an all-inclusive charge and covers wages, support costs, training, etc. We pay our apprentices weekly but will invoice you monthly. For eligible SME’s, there may also be grant funding available.

How long does it take?

The length of an Apprenticeship varies depending on prior skills levels of the apprentice, the qualification being obtained and industry sector. Generally, Apprenticeships take between a minimum of 12 months and in certain specialised sectors, up to 4 years to complete – the length varies according to sector specific Apprenticeship frameworks.

What do I need to do to take on an Apprentice from Leeds ATA?

  • Provide a work placement for a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • Provide a safe working environment
  • Provide appropriate in-company induction and uniform, as you would for any employee
  • Be involved in the selection of the apprentice from a pool of candidates
  • Pay a monthly fee to Leeds ATA covering wages and all fees

The real focus of the Leeds ATA will be progression of Apprentices into permanent employment. Whilst we don’t guarantee a permanent job at the end of the Apprenticeship, a Leeds ATA Apprenticeship will give you, as a business owner, the opportunity to get to know the apprentice in the work environment and to see the value at first hand that they can add to your business. Leeds ATA will offer support on progression opportunities as the Apprenticeship nears its end.
